Degas at the Opera, Musée d’Orsay, through January 19, 2020. Edgar Degas, a major impressionist painter (although he didn’t like to be categorized as one), famously used dancers as subjects in his sublimely luminous work. This exhibit, timed to the Paris escorts Opera’s 350th anniversary, looks at the painter’s art focused on key players at the famed institution— ballet dancers, orchestra musicians, well-heeled patrons—whose creative life proved to be a source of endless fascination for him. The show was curated by Henri Loyrette, a former director of the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay.
Marie-Antoinette: Metamorphoses of an Image, the Conciergerie, October 16, 2019 to January 26, 2020. A historic figure of endless, world-wide fascination, Marie Antoinette, Queen of France for nearly two decades, spent the last days before her execution at the Conciergerie, the site of the new exhibit that looks at the doomed monarch’s many depictions since her death in 1793 and her status as cult icon.
